Bank Holiday Monday Results

On paper it always looked like Handsworth had the easier fixtures on the bank Holiday weekend and so it proved to be but not without an eventful Saturday match at Streetly where the league rain rules work in their favour. Streelty had by far the best of it with 265 on the board (Curtis 71, Moore 100 not out) and in “normal” circumstances Handsworth at 189 for 9 would have been seen as ‘Hanging on’, but their superior run rate in this rain affect affair was enough to secure a winning Draw and 15 points. Sometimes when you are going well the luck goes with you too and that certainly appears to have been the case here. On holiday Monday Handsworth then hosted bottom club and winless Aston Unity, no fairy tale here as it went precisely to form, Handsworth handsome 24 point winners leaving there opposition nothing to show for their afternoons efforst. Handsworth 304-2 (C Dawkins 131, Hooper 106 not out) and a 247 run margin. Those 24 points became more valuable and probably decisive when 3rd met 2nd on Monday. Highway who themselves had an 18 point draw on the Saturday in another strange looking result, falling 1 run short in a rain affected match at Fillongley , met Solihull Blossemfield and in this case 3rd came out on top of second. Blosemfield ruuning out 86 run winners. The combination of results may have proved decisive as far as the 2010 WCL title is concerned as Handsworth could sow it up next week with 15 pointsat struggling Mosseley Ashfield whilst Highway again have the harder fixture against Streetly.

In Division 1 Bedworth slipped up on the Saturday with North Warwicks (Wilks 48) with another one of those batting second Winning Draws, their 127 being at the better run rate. In the battle of 2nd vs 3rd Ansley, 24 point winners did their changes a power of good defeating a four Oaks Saints side in a battle of the bowler. For Saints Khatkar 6 for 20 was out done by Ansley’s A Sayed 6 for 13 as the home side fell away chasing only 92 for victory to end 69 all out. This disappointing result all but puts pay to their challenge. On the Monday Bedworth came back to winning ways against Offchirch with an emphatic 93 run victory (T Dangerambezi 83), whilst A Sayed capped a weekend to remember with 5 for 16 as Ansley skittled out Sheldon Marlbourough for only 62. The top two spots could have been decided today but with the Four Oaks Saint also winning at Walsall YMF they still mathematically have a chance of catching the top two. The title race remains wide open with only a 8 point gap. Walsall YMF could have a say in who gets the title as they play both contender in the last two weeks and Bedworth who lead have on paper the harder run in as they also play 3rd place Four Oaks Saints

In Division 2, Bronze, Lyndworth, Standard and Barby are still all in with a chance. Lyndworth took a full 48 points, 2 wins from the weekend made the major move claiming second spot 78 run win at home to Castle Bromwichwas followed by an even more impressive 158 run defeat of Knowle Village (Shakeel 87, Z Ali 62). Bronze remain top, dropping only 7 points when on the Saturday they could not convert a winning draw against Wishaw into full points, and on the Monday travelling to Coventry to play Massey Fergusson obtained a 36 run victory and the full 24. Barby and Standard frustratingly were weather affected on the At Barby their match at home to Rugby ended with the visitors 13 for 0 chasing 156 to win. At Corley the weather may well have saved Standard who only had 119 all out on the board, Corley 4 for 0 at the end. Both Clubs were back to winning ways on Monday against Wishaw and Bourneville. Next week throws Bronze against Standard whilst on the final day Standard travel to Barby. The closeness of the Division however mean Lyndworth who avoid their rivals do not have the easier of run ins either playing Wishaw and Rugby so with only a few points in it this one goes down to the wire.

In the second team divisions the race to top the Premier is as close as it could be. 8 poitns between Bedworth, Southam, Four Oaks Saints and Warwick at the top. Southam were the big movers with wins against Aston Unity and Mosseley Ashfield neeting them 48 points whilst leaders Bedworth a winning draw also against Moseley Ashfield and a losing draw in the local derby against Nuneaton on the Monday. Just to make the race end more exciting a quirk of the fixture places Southam at Four Oaks Saints and Bedworth at Warwick on the final day after Bedworth host Four Oaks saints next weekend.

Streetly and Stockton seem to be contesting division 2 2nd XI, whilst in Division 1 2nd XI, Walsall Wmf defeated Lyndworth on Monday to take top spot winning by the narrowest of 1 wicket margins and taking top spot also by the narrowest of margins, 1 point ahead , whilst Streetly and Stockton seem to be contesting division 2 2nd XI title

All here is a brief questionnaire (attached below) about several aspects of the cricket we organise as part of the Warwickshire Cricket League, We are trying to gauge the views of the clubs before divisional meetings to formulate some suggestions of how we should develop and manage the league going forwards.

Although the survey asks for Club names and person completing it, this information is only so we know which clubs have replied and when we publish the results no names will be shown
